About The Monstera Deliciosa

The Monstera Deliciosa, sometimes also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a striking tropical houseplant famous for its large, fenestrated (fancy word for "holes") leaves. It’s popular not just for its dramatic foliage, but also for being surprisingly easy to care for —it thrives in indirect sunlight and is forgiving of both missed and over-watering.

As it matures, its leaves develop unique natural holes and splits (that's fenestration!), giving any space a lush, modern jungle feel. With support, it can climb and grow impressively tall, adding vertical interest to interiors. Perfect for beginners and plant lovers alike, Monstera Deliciosa is both a conversation piece and a reliable, low-maintenance addition to any indoor plant collection.

  • Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are shown as a range
  • Medium plant measures 12-24 inches tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Large plant measures between 22-24 inches tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Arrives in a nursery grow pot nestled in your planter choice
  • If you purchase a large plant with a planter, the planter will ship separately

Can I leave my Monstera outside in the summer?
Yes, you can leave a Monstera deliciosa outside in the summer, as it enjoys warm temperatures and indirect sunlight. However, ensure it's placed in a fully shaded area to avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Bring it back indoors when temperatures start to drop below 60°F (20°C) to protect it from cold stress.

Why is my Monstera not developing fenestrations?
A lack of fenestrations could be caused if the plant is is getting insufficient lighting, humidity, or even inadequate support for climbing. Immature plants or those that are too young may also lack fenestrations, as the splits typically appear as the plant matures. Ensuring the plant has proper care and conditions will encourage the formation of these unique leaf patterns over time.

Does a Monstera deliciosa need a moss pole or support?
Yes, Monstera deliciosa is a natural climbing vine that uses aerial roots to latch onto trees in the wild, so training it up a sturdy coco coir pole, trellis, or totem is usually recommended. Providing a vertical support mimics its natural habitat, signaling the plant to grow upright while rewarding you with much larger, more stable stems and highly fenestrated leaves. Alternatively, you can choose to leave your Monstera unsupported, but you should guide its long aerial roots back down into the pot so they can anchor into the soil and help support the plant. Without a pole to climb, the vine will naturally sprawl outward, growing wildly into a massive, wide bush that (while beautifully untamed) can quickly become very difficult to manage in an indoor space.
