About The Large Cast Iron Plant
The Cast Iron Plant, also known as Aspidistra elatior, is a stunning, low-maintenance houseplant perfect for any home or office. They are prized for their resilience and beautiful, arching foliage. Sized to ship best, our large Cast Iron Plant arrives with room to grow as it adapts to your home’s conditions,
- Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are shown as a range
- Large plant measures between 1.5-2 feet tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
- Arrives in 9.25" diameter grow pot
- Large plants benefit from brighter light to help retain their mature foliage
- Large plants require less frequent waterings due to their higher volume of soil
- If you purchase a large plant with a planter, the planter will ship separately
- Agnes planter does not contain a drainage hole

Small
Approximately 5" in diameter, fits plants in a 4" grow pot or smaller
Medium
Approximately 7" in diameter, fits plants in a 6" grow pot or smaller
Large
Approximately 10-12" in diameter, fits plants in a 10" grow pot or smaller
Massive
Approximately 12-14" in diameter, fits plants in a 12" grow pot or smaller
Watering Requirements
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing the top half of soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in medium to bright indirect light, but can tolerate low indirect light. Not suited for intense, direct sun.
Humidity Requirements
Normal room humidity can work, but Cast Iron plants can benefit from higher humidity conditions. Consider incorporating a humidifier to boost humidity levels more consistently if the air in the home is dry.

Why are my Cast Iron Plant leaves turning yellow or brown?
Yellowing leaves are commonly caused by overwatering or poor drainage, which suffocates the roots and prevents nutrient absorption. On the other hand, dry, crispy brown leaf tips typically underwatering if accompanied by dry soil and curling, wilting foliage. You can easily fix these issues by adjusting your watering schedule to let the soil either dry out more or water sooner, and pruning away damaged leaves at the base.
How do you propagate a Cast Iron Plant?
Cast Iron Plants are most successfully propagated through root division during the active growing season. Gently dislodge the plant from its container and use a sterile knife to slice through the rhizomes, ensuring each new clump has at least two to three healthy leaves. Replant the divided sections into well-draining potting mix and keep them in a shaded, warm location with moderate moisture until established.
