ZZ Plant Information

ZZ Plant
About The ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant is characterized by its waxy green leaves above the surface of its potting mix, and its large potato-like rhizomes underneath. These rhizomes store water, making the ZZ a hardy, drought-tolerant houseplant that only needs water every few weeks.

  • Small plants arrive in a 4.75" wide nursery grow pot and measure between 9-12 inches tall from the bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Medium plants arrive in a 6" wide nursery grow pot and measure between 20-26 inches tall from the bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Large plants arrive in a 9.25" wide nursery grow pot and measure between 2-3 feet tall from the bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Arrives in a nursery grow pot nestled in your planter choice
  • If you purchase a large plant with a planter, the planter will ship separately

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a ZZ Plant really survive in a room with no windows?
While a ZZ Plant can survive in windowless offices under fluorescent light, low light freezes its metabolism, stopping new growth and reducing its water intake. To prevent its roots from suffocating in wet soil, you must water less or move the plant into bright, indirect sun for actual growth. If zero-light conditions eventually cause the top foliage to die back, the hardy underground rhizomes can still remain alive to sprout fresh growth once light and water returns.

Why has my ZZ Plant stopped growing new leaves?
ZZ Plants are not continuous growers and they naturally grow in spurts. Unless they are kept under consistent optimal conditions, you will typically only see new stems shoot up during the growing season. Because it isn't the type of plant that gives you constant new leaves, watching a brand-new stalk finally emerge makes the moment even more rewarding.

How often do you water a ZZ Plant?
Only water when the potting medium is 100% dry from top to bottom. For a standard indoor pot, this usually means watering once every 1–2 weeks in the summer, and up to every 3–4 weeks in the winter. When in doubt, leave it dry, but keep an eye out for wrinkly or slightly flopping stems, which are the plant’s way of telling you it is ready for a drink.

Why is the new growth on my Black ZZ Plant bright green instead of black?
It is completely normal for all new stalks on a Black ZZ to emerge as a vibrant, neon-green color. The iconic jet-black hue develops over time as the new leaves mature and harden off, typically 4-6 weeks as the foliage is exposed to light.

Does the Raven ZZ Plant grow slower than a regular green ZZ plant?
Yes, the Raven ZZ grows at a visibly slower rate than its classic all-green cousin due to a biological limitation in its dark foliage. The dark pigment that gives the Raven its moody look partially masks the green chlorophyll beneath it, making it hard for it to photosynthesize as quickly or efficiently as a pure green ZZ.
