Watering Requirements
Newly planted trees need regular watering 1–2 times a week (or more in sandy soil) during their first growing season to build a strong root system, while established in-ground trees rarely require extra watering if planted near a water source, needing a deep soaking only once every 1–2 weeks during extended summer dry spells. Container-grown willows dry out quickly and require daily watering, or even twice-daily checks, during peak summer heat.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in full to partial sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth. They can tolerate partial shade, especially in hot southern climates, but too much shade can lead to weak branching.

Weeping Willow trees thrive in moderate to high humidity environments, making them ideal for lakefronts, riverbanks, and damp landscapes.

Where should I plant a Weeping Willow tree?
Weeping Willows have wide, shallow, and highly aggressive root systems designed to seek out moisture. The roots can spread up to three times the radius of the canopy edge and can easily infiltrate sewer pipes, crack pool liners, or lift nearby pavement if planted too close. Be sure to plant your Weeping Willow in a full-sun location with rich, moist soil but at least 50 feet away from homes, foundations, driveways, sidewalks, underground pipes, and septic fields.
When and how should you prune a Weeping Willow?
Prune during late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant. Young trees require training to a single central leader and light trimming of low-hanging branches for clearance. Once mature and established, Weeping Willows do not require routine pruning, except to remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches and clear out crossing limbs to maintain canopy airflow.
