Containers always dry out faster and require daily checking, often needing a thorough watering almost every single day during the summer heat. How did Toy Soldier™ get its name?
Wild oakleaf hydrangeas often have stems that bend or "flop" under the weight of heavy summer rain on large blooms. Toy Soldier™ was specifically bred with rigid, ultra-sturdy stems that stand perfectly straight and upright, holding its heavy blooms high like a soldier on guard.
What color are the blooms and leaves throughout the year?
In summer, Toy Soldier™ Hydrangea produces crisp white and lime-green conical flower clusters above deep green foliage. As autumn arrives, its oak-like leaves transform into brilliant shades of vermillion red, bronze, and purple. Once winter sets in, the foliage drops to reveal stunning, exfoliating cinnamon-brown bark for multi-season interest.
When and how do you prune Toy Soldier™ Hydrangea?
You actually do not need to prune them down to the base in the fall or winter; doing so removes the buds meant for next season's blooms. Feel free to lightly deadhead spent flower heads throughout the season, and prune immediately after flowering in late summer if you need to shape the plant.
