About The Musa Nono Pink Variegated Banana

A rare find for collectors and plant lovers alike, the Musa Nono Pink Variegated Banana is a variety of Musa known for its broad, striped leaves with flashes of pink. This vibrant tropical makes a striking addition to sunrooms, bathrooms, or patios in warmer climates. While primarily grown for its stunning foliage, it can also produce small, decorative bananas under optimal conditions.

NOTE: Variegation may naturally vary from plant to plant, with some showing more pink or green than others. However, with bright light and consistent care, the variegation often becomes more pronounced in new growth over time. It's normal to experience some browning as the plant acclimates to its new home.

  • Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are shown as a range
  • Large plant measures between 2-3 feet tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Arrives in 9.25" diameter grow pot
  • Large plants benefit from brighter light to help retain their mature foliage
  • Large plants require less frequent waterings due to their higher volume of soil
  • If you purchase a large plant with a planter, the planter will ship separately
  • Stalks can bend during shipping; use caution while unpackaging

The Musa Nono is a rare, variegated mutation of the banana plant family (Musaceae). It is famous for its large, tropical leaves that display striking, irregular patches of pink, white, cream, and green variegation. Unlike standard green banana plants, the Musa Nono is grown primarily as a high-end ornamental plant due to its unique genetic chimera.

Why is the Musa Nono banana so rare?
The Musa Nono is exceptionally rare because its pink variegation is a highly unstable genetic mutation. It cannot be easily mass-produced by seed and tissue culture (cloning) often fails to retain the perfect pink-to-white ratio. This means the plant is usually propagated through pups (offsets) that shoot up from the mother rhizome. Because supply is extremely limited and demand among rare plant collectors is massive, a single pup can range anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the quality of the variegation!

Are the bananas from the Musa Nono edible, and are they pink?
Yes, the Musa Nono can produce fruit if grown to full maturity in optimal tropical conditions, and the peel of the bananas themselves can feature stunning pink and white variegated stripes. The inner flesh is typically cream-colored and edible, tasting similar to standard sweet dessert bananas, though the plant is rarely grown for food.

How do you maintain the pink color on a Musa Nono?
The pink hue on a Musa Nono is highly dependent on light quality and temperature. The pink shades appear primarily on the newer, white or cream sections of the leaf as a reaction to bright, filtered light (similar to sun-stressing in succulents). If the plant receives too little light, the new leaves will look mostly white and green. If it gets too much direct, harsh light, those patches will scorch.

Can a Musa Nono revert to all-green?
Like all chimeral variegated plants, there is always a risk that a Musa Nono will revert to entirely green or throw out completely white/pink leaves (which lack chlorophyll and will eventually die). To prevent this, monitor new growth. If the plant begins pushing out purely green leaves, you may need to cut the stem back to a point where balanced variegation was previously and try improving the conditions for it.
