About The Pickle Plant
Delosperma echinatum, commonly known as the 'Pickle Plant,' is a charming succulent with fuzzy, plump stems covered in soft hairs. Native to South Africa, this quirky plant gets its name from its plump, green stems that resemble tiny gherkins (baby pickles!). It thrives in bright light with minimal waterings, making it an easy-care favorite for sunny windowsills.
In the right light, it produces small, daisy-like yellow blooms in late spring through summer. The blooms open during the day and close at night, following the sun—a behavior known as nyctinasty!

Watering Requirements
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in bright direct light, but can tolerate bright indirect light.
Humidity Requirements
Normal room humidity can work, but Delosperma can benefit from higher humidity conditions. Consider incorporating a humidifier to boost humidity levels more consistently if the air in the home is dry.
Pet-Friendly Plant?
No, this plant is not recommended in homes with pets.
How often should you water a Pickle Plant?
Water your Pickle Plant thoroughly only when the soil has completely dried out, which typically ranges from every 10-14 days. Because its leaves store water exceptionally well, this succulent is highly drought-tolerant and extremely sensitive to overwatering.
Why is my Pickle Plant leaves puckering or stretching out?
Puckered or wrinkled leaves are usually a sign of underwatering. On the other hand, if the stems are stretching out and growing leggy, the plant is suffering from etiolation due to a lack of sufficient sunlight. You can easily fix these issues by giving the plant a deep soaking, or moving a stretched plant to a much brighter south-facing window or under a grow light. You'll still need to remove leggy growth.
