How does Miracle Fruit make sour foods taste sweet?
Eating the berry coats your tongue with a protein called miraculin which sticks to your sweet taste buds. On its own, it doesn't taste like much, but as soon as you eat or drink something sour or acidic, it turns miraculin on, tricking your brain into tasting intense sweetness instead of sourness for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours!
What are the strict soil and water pH requirements for Miracle Fruit?
Miracle Fruit requires acidic soil with a pH between 4.5-5.8, similar to blueberries or azaleas, as it will quickly decline in alkaline soil. Always water with distilled water, rainwater, or acidified tap water, as hard tap water contains minerals that raise soil pH and may cause iron chlorosis.
How do you harvest and use Miracle Fruit berries?
Harvest berries when they turn completely bright red. To experience the taste-altering effect, place a fresh berry in your mouth, gently scrape the pulp off the central seed with your teeth, swish the pulp around your tongue for 1 minute before discarding the seed, and immediately try eating a slice of lemon or grapefruit!
