About The Madagascar Palm
The Madagascar Palm is a succulent in disguise—palm-like from afar, but up close, it resembles a cactus with its thick, spiny trunk and sculptural form. Native to Madagascar, it’s not a true palm at all, but a sun-loving succulent that thrives in bright light and dry conditions. Its dramatic silhouette, topped with glossy green leaves, makes it a favorite for plant lovers looking for something bold and low-maintenance. Watering Requirements
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in bright indirect light to direct sunlight. Not suited for low light conditions.
Humidity Requirements
Normal room humidity can work, but the Madagascar Palm can benefit from higher humidity conditions. Consider incorporating a humidifier to boost humidity levels more consistently if the air in the home is dry.

Why is my Madagascar Palm losing all its leaves?
This is usually a natural response to winter dormancy or insufficient lighting. Because it is a succulent, it naturally sheds foliage during its dry winter rest period to conserve water, but a dark room can also trigger leaf drop. To remedy both issues, simply move your plant to a warmer spot near a brighter window or under a full-spectrum grow light.
Why are the leaves on my Madagascar Palm turning black?
Blackening leaves are usually a sign of overwatering or a fungal infection. To fix this, make sure your plant is in a well-draining potting mix and let the soil dry out 100% between waterings. If you notice the black spots forming concentric circles and spreading from leaf to leaf, immediately prune away the infected foliage, treat the plant with a fungicide, and keep the leaves completely dry by avoiding misting.
How fast does a Madagascar Palm grow?
Indoors, it is a relatively slow grower, typically adding about 2-4 inches of height per year. In its native outdoor habitat, it can tower up to 20 feet tall, but restricted to an indoor container, it usually tops out around 4-6 feet over several years.
