The Variegated Ginger is a herbaceous perennial in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) prized for its attractive foliage and flowers. Watering Requirements
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out half way down between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in medium to bright indirect light, but can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight.
Humidity Requirements
Normal room humidity can work, but Alpinia can benefit from higher humidity conditions. Consider incorporating a humidifier to boost humidity levels more consistently if the air in the home is dry.

Why is my Variegated Ginger leaf edges turning brown and crispy?
Crispy, brown leaf edges are usually a sign of low humidity or underwatering. These tropical plants prefer humidity levels above 50%, meaning they will struggle near heating vents or drafty air conditioners. You can easily fix this by running a small humidifier nearby and adjusting your watering frequency.
Are Variegated Ginger plants toxic?
No, Variegated Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet) is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a very safe foliage plant for pet-friendly households. Unlike true culinary ginger, it won't yield a tasty harvest for your kitchen, but its leaves and stems are entirely free of harmful chemical compounds or irritating saps. To prevent minor tummy upset from fiber ingestion, it is still a good idea to keep it out of reach of curious pets or children.
