About The Dracaena Marginata Tree

The Dracaena marginata, or Dragon Tree, is a popular low-maintenance plant native to Madagascar. Its unique silhouette and height make it our go-to pick for upgrading any corner! Sized to ship best, our large Dracaena arrives with room to grow as it adapts to your home’s conditions.

  • Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are shown as a range
  • Large plant measures between 3-4 feet tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Extra large plant measures between 5-6 feet tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Large plants benefit from brighter light to help retain their mature foliage
  • Large plants require less frequent waterings due to their higher volume of soil
  • If you purchase a large plant with a planter, the planter will ship separately

Why are the lower leaves on my Dracaena Marginata turning yellow and falling off?
If it is only happening to the older, lowest leaves on the tree, this is completely normal. As the Dragon Tree grows upward, it naturally sheds its oldest, bottom-most leaves to redirect energy to the fresh crown at the top. This shedding process is exactly what creates the plant's signature, bare woody trunk style over the years. However, if leaves are yellowing or browning and dropping rapidly from all sections of the plant, it may be caused by over or underwatering depending on the soil moisture.

Why are the leaf tips of my Dragon Tree turning brown?
Like other members of its genus, the Dracaena Marginata is sensitive to fluoride, chlorine, and salts found in hard tap water. These minerals build up in the tips of the narrow leaves, causing them to turn brown, dry, and crispy. To prevent this, switch to watering with filtered water or leaching the soil periodically.

How do you prune a Dracaena Marginata that is too tall?
If your Dragon Tree is hitting the ceiling or becoming leggy, it can easily handle a hard prune. Using a sterilized pair of pruners or a sharp knife, simply cut the woody cane at your desired height. Within a few weeks, 1-3 fresh, bushy heads of new leaves should start to sprout just below the cut. Furthermore, the top section you cut off can be placed back into soil or water to easily propagate a brand-new plant!
