Watering Requirements
Hydrangeas love water, so newly planted shrubs need frequent watering, often 2-3 times a week or daily in hot weather to establish strong roots, while established in-ground plants only need a deep soaking 1-2 times a week. Containers always dry out faster and require daily checking, often needing a thorough watering almost every single day during the summer heat. Water containers thoroughly until water seeps out the drainage holes to ensure roots deep in the container get watered. Always water deeply at the base to keep leaves dry and prevent disease!
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in partial shade, preferably morning sun and afternoon shade. They can tolerate full sun in northern climates, but they should be protected from afternoon sun in southern climates.
Humidity Requirements
Prefers moderate to high humidity. Hydrangea thrive in coastal or naturally humid environments, but if you live in a very arid, dry climate, they will need extra afternoon shade and a thick layer of mulch to keep the surrounding air and soil from drying out too fast.

Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) is a species of deciduous flowering shrub native to the woods and streambanks of the central and eastern United States. It is known for its large, rounded mophead or lacecap blooms, heart-shaped smooth leaves, and exceptional cold hardiness down to USDA Zone 3.

Does smooth hydrangea turn blue or pink based on soil pH?
Unlike bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla), smooth hydrangeas will not change color from white to blue or pink regardless of soil acidity. White varieties transition to a soft lime-green as they age in fall.
When and how do you prune smooth hydrangeas?
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears by cutting the plant back by roughly one-third of its total height. Because they bloom on new wood, spring pruning will not remove this year's flowers. During pruning, trim away thin twigs and dead wood near the base to encourage thick, sturdy stems that can support heavy blooms. Avoid fall pruning so the dried flower heads can protect the plant's structure over the winter.
