Care Guide

Watering Requirements

Hydrangeas love water, so newly planted shrubs need frequent watering, often 2-3 times a week or daily in hot weather to establish strong roots, while established in-ground plants only need a deep soaking 1-2 times a week. Containers always dry out faster and require daily checking, often needing a thorough watering almost every single day during the summer heat. Water containers thoroughly until water seeps out the drainage holes to ensure roots deep in the container get watered. Always water deeply at the base to keep leaves dry and prevent disease!

Sunlight Requirements

Thrives in partial shade, preferably morning sun and afternoon shade. They can tolerate full sun in northern climates, but they should be protected from afternoon sun in southern climates. While deep, full shade will result in fewer flowers, harsh afternoon heat will quickly scorch the leaves and cause the blooms to wilt.

Humidity Requirements

Prefers moderate to high humidity. Hydrangea thrive in coastal or naturally humid environments, but if you live in a very arid, dry climate, they will need extra afternoon shade and a thick layer of mulch to keep the surrounding air and soil from drying out too fast.

Pet-Friendly Plant?

No, this plant is not recommended in homes with pets.

Most mophead hydrangeas only form buds on "old wood" (last year's stems). The Grin & tonic hydrangeas are wonderful because they bloom on both old wood and "new wood" (the current season's fresh growth). This unique trait ensures a continuous cycle of new flowers from late spring all the way until the first fall frost.

Because this is a compact, dwarf variety that naturally tops out at 2-3 feet tall and wide, space the plants about 30 inches apart from the center of each plant for a tight, seamless garden border or low hedge. If you want them to grow as distinct, individual accent bushes, give them a bit more breathing room by spacing them 3-5 feet apart depending on your design goals.

You actually do not need to prune them down to the base in the fall or winter; doing so removes the buds meant for early spring flowers. The best practice is to leave the stems alone through the winter. In mid-spring, wait until the plant begins to leaf out, then only snip off the dead, brittle wood that shows no signs of green growth. After a few years of growth, cut out one third of the oldest and thickest branches down to the ground, repeat each spring to keep your plant healthy.

If your hydrangea is all leaves and no flowers, the most common culprits are sun exposure, over-watering, or over-fertilizing. Depending on your region, these plants thrive best in morning sun with dappled afternoon shade, as intense full sun can get too hot for buds to form. Additionally, giving them too much water or fertilizer will actually stunt bloom production. Instead, aim to keep the soil moist but never soggy, and stick to just one application of fertilizer in the spring or early summer.
