Watering Requirements
Water every 1 week, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings if planted in a container. Provide one inch of water per week if planted directly in the ground. This plant will benefit from higher humidity.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in bright light to part sun conditions, preferably morning direct sun and afternoon shade. Not suited for low light areas.
Humidity Requirements
Gardenias thrive best in high-humidity environments, ideally between 50% and 60% relative humidity. If your home has dry indoor air, running a small humidifier nearby is the easiest way to keep them happy and prevent their flower buds from dropping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my gardenia flower buds falling off before they bloom?
Premature bud drop is typically a stress response triggered by sudden environmental changes, low humidity, or improper watering. Gardenias require a stable environment with consistent soil moisture and a relative humidity level between 50-60% to successfully open their blossoms. Moving the plant or exposing it to dry drafts from heating and cooling vents, or even placing in low light will also cause the buds to fall off.

How much sunlight does a Gardenia jasminoides bush need?
A Gardenia jasminoides bush thrives best when it receives at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. In cooler northern regions, it welcomes full, direct sunlight, but in hot southern climates, it needs protection from the harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. The ideal setup for warmer areas is bright morning sunlight followed by dappled afternoon shade.

How often should you water an outdoor gardenia bush?
Outdoor gardenia bushes generally require about one inch of water per week, applied deeply whenever the top few inches of soil feels dry. It is best to water directly at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry and prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew.

What kind of soil is best for Gardenia jasminoides?

When is the best time to prune a gardenia bush?
The best time to prune a gardenia bush is in the summer immediately after it finishes its main blooming cycle. This allows you to reshape the plant and remove deadwood without accidentally cutting off next year's flowers. Avoid pruning in the fall or winter, as the bush is already busy setting its buds for the upcoming spring display.
