How much light does a Dracaena need?

If it is only happening to the older, lowest leaves on the tree, this is completely normal. As the Dragon Tree grows upward, it naturally sheds its oldest, bottom-most leaves to redirect energy to the fresh crown at the top. This shedding process is exactly what creates the plant's signature, bare woody trunk style over the years. However, if leaves are yellowing or browning and dropping rapidly from all sections of the plant, it may be caused by over or underwatering depending on the soil moisture.

Why are the lower leaves on my Dracaena turning yellow and falling off?

Dracaena can be sensitive to fluoride, chlorine, and salts found in hard tap water. These minerals build up in the tips of the narrow leaves, causing them to turn brown, dry, and crispy. To prevent this, switch to watering with filtered water or leaching the soil periodically.

Why are the leaf tips of my Dracaena turning brown?

If your Dracaena is hitting the ceiling or becoming leggy, it can easily handle a hard prune during the growing season when it's actively growing. Using a sterilized pair of pruners or a sharp knife, simply cut the woody cane at your desired height. Within a few weeks, 1-3 fresh, bushy heads of new leaves should start to sprout just below the cut. Furthermore, the top section you cut off can be placed back into soil or water to easily propagate a brand-new plant!
