Crimson Doll opens spring with tight ruby-red buds that unfurl into fragrant reddish-pink flowers, then soften to a light pink as they age. The result is a shrub carrying two or three shades of bloom at once, all above lustrous green foliage that stays good-looking after the flowers finish.
At just 3 to 5 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, this is a lilac that fits real yards. Use it in a foundation bed, as a low flowering hedge, or in a large patio container where you can catch the fragrance every time you walk by. It is heat tolerant, cold hardy to zone 4, and often throws a second flush of blooms in summer.
Plant it where you walk past it often, and let the fragrance do the rest.
