About The Fan Palm
The Chinese Fan Palm (Livistona chinensis) is named after its graceful, fan-shaped leaves that can grow up to 3 to 4 feet across. Unlike other palms, this slow-growing, hardy plant is drought-tolerant and requires minimal care, making it ideal for beginners and busy plant lovers. Bonus: This palm is pet-friendly!
Note: Fan Palms naturally produce sharp spines along their stems, so use caution when handling. For easier care, you can carefully prune these spines off without harming the health of your plant!
- Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are shown as a range
- Large plants benefit from brighter light to help retain their mature foliage
- Large plants require less frequent waterings due to their higher volume of soil
- XL and Giant plants are big, which means the grow pot may peek above the planter's rim. If you'd prefer a cleaner look, simply remove the grow pot and plant directly into the planter.

Watering Requirements
Water every 1-2 weeks allowing soil to dry out halfway between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light. This plant can benefit from higher humidity but can tolerate normal room humidity levels.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in medium to bright indirect light to some direct sun. Not suited for low light conditions.
Humidity Requirements
Normal room humidity can work, but Palms can benefit from higher humidity conditions. Consider incorporating a humidifier to boost humidity levels more consistently if the air in the home is dry.

What is a Chinese Fan Palm?
The Chinese Fan Palm is a slow-growing subtropical evergreen tree native to East Asia (specifically China, Japan, and Taiwan). Belonging to the palm family (Arecaceae), it produces distinctive, massive circular fronds divided into segmented leaflets that cascade downward. While it can reach massive heights outdoors in tropical landscapes, it scales down beautifully into a container plant when grown indoors or on patios.
How much sunlight does an indoor Chinese Fan Palm need?
Indoors, the Chinese Fan Palm requires abundant, bright, indirect sunlight to maintain its structural vigor. Place your palm directly near an east- or west-facing window, or a few feet back from an unobstructed south-facing window.While mature outdoor specimens can adapt to blazing, full direct sun, indoor-grown fan palms can easily experience leaf scorching if subjected to sudden, midday sun.
How often should you water a Chinese Fan Palm?
Water your palm thoroughly as soon as the top half of soil has dried out, generally every 7-10 days. Soak the soil thoroughly until water drains out of the drainage holes, then empty the saucer after 5-10 minutes.
Is the Chinese Fan Palm safe for cats and dogs?
Yes! The Chinese Fan Palm is 100% non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. However, because of the sharp thorns located along the lower frond stems, keep it out of high-traffic paths where curious pets or children might accidentally brush against them.
