About The Cardboard Palm
We’re currently crushing on the Cardboard Palm. Not a true palm, this cycad plant (Zamia furfuracea) gets its common name from its palm-like silhouette, oval-shaped leaflets, and, arguably, love of bright light. It’s a quirky, low-maintenance plant that will add character to any space for years to come.

Sizing Guide
Small
Approximately 5" in diameter, fits plants in a 4" grow pot or smaller
Medium
Approximately 7" in diameter, fits plants in a 6" grow pot or smaller
Large
Approximately 10-12" in diameter, fits plants in a 10" grow pot or smaller
Massive
Approximately 12-14" in diameter, fits plants in a 12" grow pot or smaller
Watering Requirements
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in bright indirect light to full sun. Not suited for low light. South & West facing windows ideal, and consider grow lights in Fall/Winter.
Humidity Requirements
Palms prefer higher humidity if possible, preferably above 40%. Consider incorporating a humidifier to boost humidity levels more consistently if the air in the home is dry.

Why is the Cardboard Palm called by that name?
It gets its unique common name from its incredibly stiff, thick, and rigid leaflets. Touching a frond feels exactly like handling thick, fuzzy cardboard or heavy leather, a structural adaptation that helps it retain moisture in arid environments.
Is the Cardboard Palm toxic to pets?
Yes, just like its cousin the Sago Palm, the Cardboard Palm is highly toxic to pets and humans. All parts of the plant contain cycasin, which triggers severe vomiting, internal bleeding, and irreversible liver failure if chewed or swallowed. Keep this plant out of reach of curiouse pets or children.
How often should you water a Cardboard Palm?
It stores water in its thick, exposed underground trunk called a caudex which makes it drought-tolerant. Water it thoroughly, then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. During the winter months, drop your watering back to once every 3-4 weeks to avoid trunk rot.
