Watering Requirements
Water newly planted bamboo 2-3 times per week during the first two growing seasons. Once established, provide roughly 1 inch of water per week during dry periods.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in partial shade, preferably morning sun and afternoon shade. They can tolerate full sun in northern climates, but they should be protected from afternoon sun in southern climates.
Humidity Requirements
Bamboo prefers moderate to high relative humidity levels, approximately 50-70% or higher. In dry outdoor climates or dry indoor air, low humidity causes leaf curling, browning tips, and premature leaf drop.

Why are new Black Bamboo shoots green instead of black?
New shoots emerge green during their first spring season. The dark pigment develops gradually over 1 to 3 years as the culms are exposed to sunlight and mature, transitioning from green to speckled brown and finally to solid ebony black.
Is Black Bamboo a running or clumping bamboo?
Black Bamboo is a running bamboo. It spreads using underground monopodial rhizomes that travel horizontally and send up new shoots away from the main plant. To prevent them from getting agressive, try growing them in raised beds, submerged heavy-duty containers, or perform annual root pruning along the perimeter each fall.
When and how do you prune Black Bamboo?
Prune in late summer or early spring by removing dead, damaged, or overcrowded stems at soil level using sharp loppers or a hand saw. To showcase the striking black stems, trim away lower branches up to 4-6 feet high.
Do bamboo plants bloom or flower?
Yes, but very rarely. Unlike most flowering plants that bloom annually, many woody bamboo species are monocarpic, meaning they flower only once in their lifetime and then die. They bloom on long, cyclical intervals ranging from 40-120+ years depending on the species, diverting all their energy into seed production before the entire plant perishes.
