Bird of Paradise Information

Bird of Paradise
About The Bird of Paradise

With its broad vibrant green leaves, the Bird of Paradise brings a touch of the tropics to any room. It's named after its unique flowers, which resemble brightly colored birds in flight. The Bird of Paradise thrives in warmer conditions with plenty of sunlight. Sized to ship best, our large Bird of Paradise arrives with room to grow as it adapts to your home’s conditions.

  • The Bird of Paradise has leaf splitting which is a normal adaptive precaution to help the plant bear strong winds in its native habitat
  • Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are shown as a range
  • Medium plant measures 18-26 inches tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Large plant measures between 3-4 feet tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Extra Large plant measures between 5-5.5 feet tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Large plants benefit from brighter light to help retain their mature foliage
  • Large plants require less frequent waterings due to their higher volume of soil
  • If you purchase a large plant with a planter, the planter will ship separately

What is causing the leaves to split on my Bird of Paradise?
The leaves naturally split to allow wind to pass through without damaging the plant in its native environment. This splitting helps the plant to remain stable and reduces the risk of leaf tearing in strong winds. In indoor settings, leaf splitting can also occur due to low humidity or physical damage.

How do I get my Bird of Paradise to bloom?
It's hard for a Bird of Paradise to bloom indoors because it rarely gets enough intense, direct sunlight to fuel its flowers. Additionally, the plant usually needs to be at least three to five years old to bloom. To encourage flowering, consider moving the plant to a greenhouse or placing it outdoors in a sunny spot during the warm spring and summer months to maximize its light exposure.

Why are the leaves on my Bird of Paradise curling?
Curling leaves are a classic defense mechanism that indicates the plant is losing moisture faster than its roots can absorb it. The most common culprit is underwatering or extremely dry indoor air, which causes the plant to roll its leaves inward to reduce the surface area exposed to the air and conserve water.
