Watering Requirements
Newly planted Crape Myrtles need deep watering 1-2 times a week during their first growing season to build a strong root system, while established in-ground trees generally only require a deep soaking during extended summer dry spells. Container-grown Crape Myrtles dry out much faster and require checking every 1–2 days during peak summer heat.

Thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal blooming. Tolerate some light shade, but planting them in too much can reduce flowering and increase susceptibility to fungal issues.

What is "Crape Murder" and how do you prune correctly?
"Crape Murder" refers to the harmful practice of topping large Crape Myrtle trunks down to thick stubs every winter. To prune correctly, remove dead or crossing branches, thin out weak suckers from the base, and prune branches back to a lateral branch in late winter. Never chop major limbs off flat, as this creates weak shoots that snap under summer bloom weight.
How and when should you fertilize Crape Myrtles?
Fertilize Crape Myrtles in early spring as new growth emerges using a slow-release, balanced fertilizer or specialized tree food with a higher phosphorus ratio to promote heavy flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which stimulate excessive leafy green foliage instead of flower clusters.
