Alocasia Black Velvet

Yellowing leaves on an Alocasia are most frequently caused by overwatering, poor soil drainage, or natural older leaf shedding. If the soil stays waterlogged, the roots suffocate, leading to root rot and yellowing foliage. However, if your plant is consistently growing a vibrant new leaf while simultaneously losing its oldest, lowest leaf, this is completely normal behavior. Alocasias are heavy feeders that frequently sacrifice older leaves to divert energy and nutrients to fresh growth.

If you notice clear water droplets forming at the tips of your Alocasia leaves, you are witnessing a natural plant process called guttation. When you water your plant, the roots absorb moisture from the soil. If the soil is highly saturated and the indoor humidity is high, the plant releases excess water pressure through specialized pores on the leaf edges called hydathodes. While occasional guttation is perfectly normal and harmless, frequent or heavy dripping is a subtle warning sign that your soil is staying a bit too wet. Scale back your watering frequency slightly or increase the light if the plant is in lower light.

If your Alocasia drops all its leaves, it is likely not dead, but has entered winter dormancy or sustained shock. Alocasias grow from a thick, nutrient-storing underground tuber (bulb), which means you can easily restart the plant if this bulb is still healthy. To check, gently brush away the top layer of dirt and give the tuber a squeeze. If it is firm and solid rather than mushy, simply place the pot in a warm, bright room and water sparingly until brand-new stalks sprout.
