How to Care for a Stromanthe Triostar

The Stromanthe Triostar, also known as the tricolor prayer plant, is a popular non-toxic indoor plant that is prized for its unique and stunning foliage. This plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil and belongs to the Marantaceae family. It gets its nickname from the fact that its leaves feature three colors: green, cream, and pink. The leaves are also known for their unique shape, which is almost reminiscent of a fishbone.

Types of Stromanthe Triostar

The Stromanthe Triostar is a popular houseplant, and there are many different types of Stromanthe available, all of which are part of the same family. Some of the most popular types of Stromanthe Triostar include:

  • Stromanthe Sanguinea (Triostar)
  • Stromanthe thalia 'Magic Star' (Magic Star)
  • Stromanthe amabilis

Sunlight

The Stromanthe triostar prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can damage its leaves, so it's best to place it near a window that gets plenty of light but not direct afternoon sun. Unobstructed North and East facing windows are best, but diffused West and South exposures can work as long as you block the plants view to the sun.

If you notice that the leaves are turning brown or becoming crispy, it may be a sign that the plant is getting too much sun. Not sure if your space will provide enough light? Consider measuring light to ensure your Stromanthe will receive enough!

Water

When it comes to watering your Stromanthe, it's important to strike a balance. You don't want the soil to dry out completely, but you also don't want it to be constantly wet. Aim to water your it once a week, allowing half the soil to dry out between waterings. If the leaves start to droop or curl inwards, it's usually a sign that the plant needs water if accompanied with dry soil. You can utilize a moisture meter to help you properly gauage soil moisture and avoid overwatering!

Prayer plants can be sensitive to hard tap water. Try using filtered water or leaving water out overnight before using.

Humidity

The Stromanthe Triostar is a tropical plant, which means it thrives in humid conditions typically ranging between 30-40% or higher indoors. Not sure if humidity is high enough? You can measure the level of humidity with a hygrometer or LTH meter.

If your home is particularly dry, you may need to increase the humidity around your plant. Placing a humidifier nearby will be the best way to localize adequate humidity levels consistently.

Temperature

The Stromanthe Triostar prefers temperatures between 65°F and 75°F. Avoid placing your plant near drafty windows, doors or in front of AC or heating units as sudden drops in temperature or fluctuating drafts can cause leaf drop.

Soil

The Stromanthe Triostar prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A good potting mix for this plant will include coco coir, perlite, and compost.
