About The Wintergreen Cherry Berries
The American Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), also called Wintergreen Cherry Berries, is a low-growing native that brings year-round interest to shady garden beds and a hint of festivity to your indoor decor. This woodland charmer produces glossy evergreen leaves, delicate white flowers in summer, and vibrant red berries that persist through winter. The foliage also emits a minty fragrance when crushed, creating a unique sensory experience!

- Medium plants measure between 3-5 inches tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage

Watering Requirements
Water every 1 week, allowing soil to dry out halfway down between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in bright indirect light to morning direct sun. Not suited for low light or full afternoon direct sun.
Humidity Requirements
Normal room humidity can work, but Gaultheria can benefit from higher humidity conditions indoors. Consider incorporating a humidifier to boost humidity levels more consistently if the air in the home is dry.

How much should I water my Wintergreen 'Cherry Berries'?
Since these are native woodland forest plants, they like their soil to stay moist. Indoors or in patio planters, check on them once a week and water once the top half of the soil has dried out. Outdoors, they will need occasional watering during dry summer spells to keep their roots happy, but they won't survive in waterlogged soil.
Are those bright red wintergreen berries edible?
Yes, they absolutely are! The 'Cherry Berries' variety was bred specifically to produce extra-large, abundant berries that have a sweet, minty flavor just like wintergreen candy or toothpaste. In fact, if you gently crush the dark green leaves, they will also release a refreshing minty scent.
Can I grow Wintergreen Cherry Berries indoors?
While they make festive indoor houseplants for the winter holidays, they are actually incredibly cold-hardy, evergreen groundcovers native to North America. If you keep yours inside, try to place it in a cool room away from blasting heaters, as they prefer cooler air. Once spring rolls around, they will be much happier if you transplant them outside to a shady garden bed with acidic soil, if desired.
