How much light does a Vanilla Orchid need to grow and flower?
To thrive and eventually produce vanilla beans, the Vanilla Orchid requires bright, filtered, indirect sunlight. In its native tropical habitat, it grows as a climbing vine under the jungle canopy. While it can survive in lower light, it needs abundant indirect light, or a strong grow light, to reach maturity and initiate a blooming cycle.
How do you water a Vanilla Orchid and manage its unique roots?
Because the Vanilla Orchid is a semi-epiphytic climbing vine, it absorbs moisture through both its potting medium and its aerial roots. Water the soil only when the top half feel dry, and consider providing a coco coir pole or trellis and mist the aerial roots/pole regularly if humidity is low.
How long does it take for a Vanilla Orchid to bloom and produce vanilla beans?
A Vanilla Orchid typically takes 3-7 years to reach blooming maturity, and the vine usually needs to grow 10 to 15 feet long before it will flower. Once mature, a singular greenish-yellow flower opens for just one day. To get an actual vanilla bean pod, you must manually hand-pollinate the flower in the morning before it wilts, after which the pod takes roughly 9 months to mature on the vine!
What temperature and humidity do Vanilla Orchids require?
As a native to tropical rainforests, Vanilla planifolia demands high humidity (70-85%) and consistently warm temperatures. Keep daytime temperatures between 70-85°F, and do not let nighttime temps fall below 55°F. Sudden drafts or cold snaps can stunt its growth, cause leaf drop, or entirely prevent the vine from producing flower buds.
