About The Prickly Pear Cactus
The Prickly Pear Cactus, scientifically known as Opuntia monacantha ‘Joseph's Coat’, is an instant icon. With its flat paddles are covered in thick, long spines, it could be pulled straight from an episode of Coyote and Roadrunner. This resilient cactus thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and requires minimal watering, perfect for busy plant parents. Low maintenance and big style. It's a win-win.
The cactus you receive may arrive with or without variegation, which refers to the unique patterns or streaks of lighter or darker color on the plant. Variegation occurs naturally and may vary from plant to plant, making each one special.
Note: Our cacti aren’t cuttings—they’re fully rooted plants! This means they’re already established and ready to thrive in their new home. Succulents naturally have shallow roots, so don’t be surprised if that’s what you see, it’s a completely natural trait!

Watering Requirements
Water every 2-3 weeks in direct light, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in bright direct light, but can tolerate bright indirect light.
Humidity Requirements
Cacti prefer low humidity levels, so it's best to keep them in a dry environment. Avoid placing them in a bathroom or other area with high humidity, as this can cause fungal diseases to develop or the soil to remain moist for too long.

Are Prickly Pear cactus pads and fruit edible?
Yes! Both the flat green pads (known as nopales) and the oval-shaped fruits (known as tunas) are completely edible, highly nutritious, and staples of traditional Mexican cuisine.
Can Prickly Pear Cactus survive the winter outside?
This specific cultivar is a tropical desert native and is not cold-hardy. It can only survive outdoors year-round if you live in a frost-free climate (USDA Zones 9-11), as it will suffer severe cold damage or die if temperatures drop below 30F.
Why are my Prickly Pear pads dropping or falling over?
If your Prickly Pear cactus pads are dropping or leaning, it could be a sign of environmental stress or simply a natural reproductive habit. Skinny, pale top pads indicate etiolation from a lack of light or even water, while a yellow, squishy base signals root rot from overwatering. However, if the plant is otherwise healthy, it may simply have become top-heavy! In the wild, mature pads naturally break off under their own weight and drop to the soil, where they easily root and propagate into entirely new plants.
