Philodendrons come in many different shapes and sizes. Plant breeders aim to take the best characteristics of plants (such as disease-resistance, color, etc.), and through different techniques combine them into one plant. One desirable trait that breeders look for is compactness. This trait tends to make plants look more full. However, the compact species of Philodendrons generally have unattractive foliage. Through multiple crossbreedings, a few stand out cultivars have emerged including ‘McColley’s Finale’ and ‘Moonlight’. Both are disease-resistant, compact, and colorful.
Hybrid ‘PHIL01’ was first asexually propagated in January of 2010. #science.
