Large Peruvian Apple Cactus Information

Large Peruvian Apple Cactus
About The Large Peruvian Apple Cactus

The Peruvian Apple Cactus, scientifically known as Cereus peruvianus, is a striking and hardy houseplant that adds a touch of midnight magic to any space. While loved for its tall, columnar structure and ribbed, bluish-green stems, the real show happens after dark! During the summer, it produces massive, spectacular white flowers that bloom for just one night. Highly rewarding yet incredibly low-maintenance, this sun-loving cactus thrives in bright light with minimal water.

Note: Our cacti aren’t cuttings—they’re fully rooted plants! This means they’re already established and ready to thrive in their new home. Succulents naturally have shallow roots, so don’t be surprised if that’s what you see, it’s a completely natural trait!

  • Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are shown as a range
  • Large plant measures between 2-3 feet tall from bottom of the grow pot to the top of the foliage
  • Arrives in 9.25" diameter grow pot
  • Large plants benefit from brighter light to help retain their mature foliage
  • Large plants require less frequent waterings due to their higher volume of soil
  • If you purchase a large plant with a planter, the planter will ship separately

Watering Requirements
Water every 2-3 weeks in direct light, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Sunlight Requirements
Thrives in bright direct light, but can tolerate bright indirect light.
Humidity Requirements
Cacti prefer low humidity levels, so it's best to keep them in a dry environment. Avoid placing them in a bathroom or other area with high humidity, as this can cause fungal diseases to develop or the soil to remain moist for too long.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big does a Peruvian Apple Cactus get indoors vs. outdoors?
In its native habitat or when planted in the ground outdoors (USDA Zones 9–11), the Peruvian Apple Cactus grows at a moderate rate into a massive, tree-like structure that can easily reach 20-30 feet tall and up to 15 feet wide. When grown as a houseplant or in containers, its size is naturally restricted by the container's volume and lower light levels, and typically peaks around 3-6 feet tall.

Is the Peruvian Apple Cactus fruit edible, and what does it taste like?
Yes, the fruit is completely edible, non-toxic, and delicious! The cactus produces round, thornless, bright red-to-magenta fruits that closely resemble small apples. Often compared to dragon fruit (pitaya), the inside features a white, crunchy pulp speckled with tiny, edible black seeds. It has a mild, refreshing, and subtly sweet tropical flavor.

Why isn't my Peruvian Apple Cactus flowering?
If your cactus isn't blooming, it is likely due to a lack of light or immaturity. These plants must reach a certain age—often growing up to 6 feet tall—and require an immense amount of energy to produce their massive, trumpet-shaped white blossoms. Consequently, blooming is usually only achieved by plants grown outdoors either year-round or for a portion of the year.
