Bird of Paradise

in large grant Planter

The Bird of Paradise is paired with our large Grant pot, an earthenware bowl floor planter measuring 11.6" tall and 12" wide. It does not have a drainage hole but instead has a layer of porous lava rocks lining the bottom to ensure proper drainage. The Grant is named after Grant Park, a large urban green space lovingly referred to as “Chicago’s Front Yard”. The Bird of Paradise does best in a sunny spot with bright light.

    • Origin: Africa

Strelitzia reginae, closely related to the bananas (Musaceae), is a species of evergreen tropical herbaceous plant that is native to South Africa. These regal plants are thus named for the beautiful, cranelike flowers that they produce. If given full, southern exposure, proper humidity, and temperature, they may flower indoors, although rarely. This plant’s scientific name commemorates Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen consort and wife of King George III. Queen Charlotte was a patron of the arts and an amateur botanist, and helped to greatly expand Kew Gardens. If your BoP leaves start to split along the edges, don’t fret, this torsion of leaves helps the plant survive strong winds in its natural habitat.
