If you’re into astrology, you know that each zodiac sign has a very distinct personality and set of expectations and needs. So, wouldn’t each sign have a very different desire when it comes to their houseplants?

We reconnected with our friends The AstroTwins after our in-person astrology event in NYC to start the new year with a new partnership: developing plant pairings for each zodiac sign. Read on for their expertise on fire, earth, water and air signs, as well as Feng Shui Astrology, which places each person into an element based on their birth year.

Fire Signs

1. Aries: Calathea Dottie

Vibrant Aries is a fascinating fire sign, and your bold personality matches Calathea Dottie’s to a tee. While you’re independent, you love providing for those who rely on you—and as a proud plant parent, you won’t mind fussing over this one!

Calathea Dottie has a very colorful personality, putting its beautiful painted leaves out on display, as well as dancing with the light as it rises and sets each day. This beauty, however, can be sort-of clingy with its requirements needing warmer temperatures, higher humidity levels, and indirect light. Any Calathea is a great pair for a caretaker personality.

2. Leo: Monstera Deliciosa

Head-turning Leos attract the spotlight wherever they go. Like the Monstera Deliciosa, your presence fills a room and is impossible to ignore. Leos also love bright light, too, whether it’s from your ruling star, the Sun, or a stadium filled with adoring fans.

The Monstera Deliciosa is an attention seeker who likes to make a statement and stand out from the rest. Whether they are bushing out at floor level or climbing toward the ceiling, they will certainly find a way to capture attention. Bright indirect light, and keeping the soil on the drier side is ideal, and boosting humidity will make them even happier!

3. Sagittarius: Coffee Plant

Hyperkinetic Sagittarians rarely run out of energy, and they don’t need a lot of attention to grow and expand. This low-maintenance, high-velocity sign runs on “natural caffeine” and, like the Coffee Plant, adds natural vibrance to every space and scene!

Having an energetic personality, the Coffee Plant’s shiny green foliage brings life to any room it enters. Give water every 1-2 weeks, bright indirect light, along with minimal pruning to help keep its shape.

Earth Signs

4. Taurus: Satin Pothos

Hardy, self-assured Tauruses know who they are and what they like and never apologize for it. They seek comfort in any situation and know how to be self-sufficient. Although this sign likes nice things, they can be surprisingly low-maintenance, preferring to provide for others instead of demanding too much for themselves.

Satin Pothos is a beautiful plant with that go-with-the-flow attitude, trailing and climbing wherever it’s comfortable. Adaptable to various light and environmental conditions, the Pothos will remain confident without a fuss.

5. Virgo: Echeveria Agavoides

Self-contained with a hermit side, Virgos don’t mind spending time by themselves. In fact, they may prefer it! This regimented sign loves a plan and to have everything in its place. Virgos will happily parent a plant that follows a schedule and tends to be fastidious just like them, just like the Echeveria Agavoides.

This Echeveria likes to stick to a routine, having things be a certain way, otherwise discomfort is inevitable. More of an introvert, the Echeveria will live happily planted alone in a window with full sun and will need water once the soil has dried.

6. Capricorn: Haworthia Zebra

The most resilient of the signs, Capricorns are built to last—in fact, they thrive on surviving under minimalist conditions. The less you fuss over them, the better, just like the Haworthia Zebra. Sleek and chic, this understated sign pairs perfectly with a plant that’s ruggedly handsome, too.

A reliable plant whose tough, hardy leaves display how durable it can be. Haworthias don’t need a lot of maintenance to look good and can tolerate neglect. The plant doesn’t need full sun to be happy, and keeping the waterings on the infrequent side.

Air Signs

7. Gemini: Marble Pothos

Versatile Gemini has many sides and colors, just like the variegated leaves of the Marble Pothos. There’s no set pattern they’ll follow, no single reason to their rhyme, and that’s what makes both Gemini and this plant unique! Like the Marble Pothos, Geminis love to stay busy—and it takes just the right conditions to get them to settle down.

The Pothos has a versatile nature that is flexible to various conditions. It will work a bit harder than most since its variegated zones make it work twice as hard to retain its beautiful white/green foliage. Therefore, giving the plant bright indirect light will quench its thirst to have a busy schedule!

8. Libra: Bird’s Nest Fern

Libra is ruled by aesthetic and empathic Venus—and the delicate, lovely Bird’s Nest Fern also exudes a rare beauty. Just like this plant, Libras don’t apologize for being high maintenance. After all, you get to bask in their beauty and love—a fair exchange for your extra efforts, right?

The Bird’s Nest requires a little extra love and care - they get fussy when neglected. Indirect light, higher humidity, and a bit more frequent waterings are key to live happily with a Birds Nest Fern. In return, it will reward you with beautiful fronds and compassion.

9. Aquarius: Pilea Peperomioides

The Aquarius, AKA the zodiac’s Water Bearer, is a peppy presence in any group, just like the Pilea Peperomiodes. As the sign of the future, Aquarians don’t like to get dragged into drama. They’d rather envision a bright tomorrow and spread happiness, just like this plant.

The Pilea is truly one of a kind with a bubbly personality that their bouncy leaves help convey. Medium-bright indirect light and light waterings are ideal to keep their perky, optimistic demeanor balanced. Otherwise, without the fundamentals it needs, you won’t be able to absorb its good vibes.

Water Signs

10. Cancer: All Ficus

Cancer is ruled by the moon, and like the lunar phases, this sign’s moods can fluctuate. Ficus plants also ebbs and flows, and just like this zodiac sign, may need lots of coddling to give it enough confidence to grow. Beachy Crabs thrive in the Sun, too, and this plant-parent pairing will bond through Cancer’s attentive caretaking.

Ficus varieties, like the Fiddle Leaf Fig, are striking plants that like change as they will grow with their environment and not remain the same. A demanding plant perfect for someone who has the patience to give it the care and pruning it’ll need. Being sun lovers they will require a location close to a window that gets bright light.

11. Scorpio: Philodendron Green

Transformational Scorpio attracts attention without trying. After all, they have a secretive side to them and don’t necessarily want to be noticed. But their magnetic energy turns heads nonetheless, something they have strongly in common with the Philodendron Green.

Philodendron has a tolerant nature to various conditions, both low and bright indirect light. As well as requiring minimal waterings, they are easy going and don’t need to be in the spotlight to draw attention.

12. Pisces: ZZ Plant

Pisces are natural nurturers, but this daydreamy sign can slip into their imagination, losing track of things like time, space and watering schedules. For the caring water sign that doesn’t always thrive in the mundane, the ZZ Plant will keep on growing and going, adapting to fluctuating conditions just like the zodiac’s Fish.

A great plant for someone who’s always on the go, the ZZ is a very forgiving and hardy plant that can endure a wide array of conditions. Water when the soil is dry, but even if you forget the plant won’t fret since it’s pretty drought tolerant. No matter the weather, the ZZ manages to remain low maintenance but looking good.

Feng Shui Astrology: The 5 Elements

Metal (Born in a year ending in 0 or 1): Succulent Assortment

The Metal element is sharp and precise, cutting through the fluff and getting to the point, just like this array of succulents. Hardy and a little bit harsh, self-sufficient Metal people flourish the more they’re challenged. Need to think or communicate more clearly? Bring succulents in to enhance the Metal energy of your home.

Succulents are to the point, forthright plants when it comes to care, and would be great with someone with a similar personality. They need bright light to full sun, the soil should always dry out between waterings, and thrive in neglect.

Water (Born in a year ending in 2 or 3): Peperomia Obtusifolia

Creative and guided by emotion, Water follows its own currents and ever-changing tides. Like the Peperomia Obtusifolia, this sensitive element can certainly “spiral out” into a million side projects and tributaries. If you’re feeling stuck in a rut and need to bring more flow into your life, or you want to enhance imagination and artistry, introduce the Water element with a Peperomia plant.

While a bit more low maintenance, they do like some level of attention to keep them grounded otherwise they get impulsive. Pruning the growth tips back will help create a compact look and prevent the plant from spiraling everywhere as it grows! Tolerant of low light conditions, but will thrive in bright indirect light. Water when soil is dry.

Wood (Born in a year ending in 4 or 5): Parlor Palm

Growth is the goal for the Wood element, a lifelong learner that strives for mastery. Like a towering tree, Wood can be rigid and regimented, not adapting easily to change and even being a bit of a diva! But it’s also solid and reliable, setting down deep roots. If you’re feeling ungrounded or in need of a steady and anchoring presence, let the Parlor Palm usher Wood energy into your world.

The Parlor Palm is a homebody that likes to remain comfortable and doesn’t adapt very well to change. It’s best to give this plant what it wants. However, the calmness of the foliage helps balance out their demanding personality. Place in a warm, humid environment that receives good indirect light, and prevent the soil from staying dry for too long!

Fire (Born in a year ending in 6 or 7): Snake Plant Laurentii

The Fire element is symbolized by triangular shapes that point upward. The Snake Plant Laurentii mirrors the ambitious Fire expression, with leaves that resemble leaping flames. Looking to activate your ambition or add more fire to your desires? Bring a Snake Plant Laurentii into your home.

A true extrovert that always stands out and draws attention even when it doesn’t need it, Snake Plant Laurentii is a plant you can depend on to stick with you no matter the ups and downs. The plant will thrive in low or bright light conditions, and prefers the soil to get dry between waterings.

Earth (Born in a year ending in 8 or 9): Hoya Heart

The Earth element is represented by shapes that are low, squat or flat, and this is the rare plant that matches that to a tee. Loyal, low-maintenance and giving, tenacious Earth people are the ultimate caretakers. Need some stability or the patience to see an endeavor through? Want to bring nurturing energy into your life? Add a Hoya Heart to your plantscape.

Hoya Hearts believe in simplicity and aren’t always accustomed to change. Their love remains the same no matter the conditions making it a true romantic. Bright light conditions and infrequent waterings are all the plant needs to stay happy!
