Memorial Day Inspiration

With a long (and hopefully beautiful) Memorial Day Weekend fast approaching, we thought we'd pull together some red, white, & blue inspiration to inspire you to get outside and enjoy the holiday weekend with friends and family.

Our top 5 tips for having a memorable Memorial Day -
1. Embrace the color-scheme. Wear your white, red, & blue proudly!
2. Be snap happy.
3. Cook classics. When deciding what to serve, stick with the summer classics - think hotdogs and hamburgers, sliced heirloom tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, and a cold pesto pasta salad. For a desert, a classic vanilla cake pilled with berries.
4. Decorate. String starry paper garlands, hang christmas lights, and pot plants in red, white, & blue painted terra cotta.
5. Say thanks. If you're not hosting, make sure not to show up empty-handed. A potted plant or bottle of wine will do. Don't have time to grab something? Send a gracious thank-you note the following week.

Fullerton Arboretum, California

This past weekend, our plant expert Lisa Muñoz visited the Fullerton Arboretum, a 26 acre botanical garden at California State University. Not only did she miss a rainy & gloomy weekend here in NYC, but she also got to visit what could be considered 'cactus heaven'. To make up for our envy, she sent us some behind the scenes snapshots. Enjoy! #plantporn

Treescapes by Myoung Ho Lee

For the past decade, artist Myoung Ho Lee has been shooting trees around his native South Korea. However, these are no ordinary landscape shoots - he shoots each tree against a stark white canvas, creating the feel and focus of a studio portrait, and ultimately foregrounding what would normally be considered background. The result is an image that exemplifies purity, yet is quite elaborate to produce; creating each canvas to tree-size takes industrial cranes, ropes, and numerous extra sets of hands. The portraits are simple in concept yet complex in execution.

After shooting, Lee retouches each image to erase any trace of man - "If the mechanics of the artwork were visible, it would be easier for people to recognize the scale and the method. But I want to hide them, to infuse a magical and vague aspect to my work, so that views may question and try to find answers themselves." We think Lee's portraits are strikingly beautiful and unique. What do you think?

Plants in the Home: Coffee Table

A perfect, and usually overlooked, place for a plant is your coffee table.

Our 5 Tips on How-To Make Your Coffee Table Instagram-worthy:

1. Accessorize.

A coffee table gives you a free pass to purchase that mini ceramic elephant you just have to have. Obviously.

2. Think "over and under".

Don't forget to show bottom shelves some love, too.

3. Lack of storage?

Contain creatively. Look for contains with unique textures and designs.

4. Mix modern and organic.

Think shiny, oversized coffee table books, a big bowl of seashells, pillar candles in various heights, and a live plant in a swoon-worthy planter.

5. Layer.

Stack books, trays, bowls, & boxes to create height and strengthen the presence of favorite objects.
